Nurturing a Tradition of Charitable
Giving in the Greenbrier Valley since 1999

The Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation (GVCF) was established in 1999 to create and administer funds, accept contributions, and distribute grants.  Responsibility for policy and direction is vested in a volunteer Board of Directors consisting of residents from throughout the tri-county area.

GVCF's main functions include establishing perpetual endowment funds for individuals, businesses, and nonprofits, providing sustained financial support for charitable purposes. Operating its unrestricted fund, the organization directs grants to local nonprofits, contributing to community welfare. Additionally, it serves as a fiscal sponsor for community projects, offering vital financial oversight. In summary, the organization plays a pivotal role in fostering philanthropy, sustaining charitable efforts, and nurturing community development.

Why be a part of the Community Foundation?

Service

GVCF accepts and acknowledges contributions in many forms.  It establishes investment policies, conducts investment reviews, provides quarterly statements, and awards grants according to the parameters of each fund agreement.

Ease

Creating a fund is simple and quick, requiring minimal paperwork and no fees.

Security

Assets are managed by investment professionals at area trustee banks.

Diversification

Funds are aggregated to provide maximum diversity and strength in the investment portfolio.  Each fund earns the same return regardless of size.  As of 2024, the foundation has over $21.9 million in assets.

Accountability

Receipts and expenditures are independently reviewed and fully disclosed to the public.  Copies of IRS filings are available online and in the Community Foundation’s office. The foundation administers the fund in the fund sponsor’s behalf.

Perpetuity

Gifts become part of a perpetual trust with income continuing through the years to support projects chosen by the donor.

Economy

Accounting, legal, and other administrative expenses are covered by a modest charge against the income of each fund.

Tax Benefits

As a publicly supported organization, GVCF offers maximum deductibility for income, gift, and estate tax purposes.
